This makes more efficient irrigation increasingly important for today’s growers. (eur-lex.europa.eu)

From Experience to Data

For many years, irrigation decisions were based mainly on the grower’s experience and on observing the soil and the condition of the trees.

Today, however, precision agriculture gives farmers access to much more detailed information. Soil moisture sensors, weather stations, flow meters and telemetry systems can provide real-time data on the actual needs of the crop.

As a result, irrigation can take place when it is truly needed, rather than simply following a fixed schedule.

Technology Is Already Being Used in Greek Olive Groves

This technology is no longer just theoretical. In September 2026, a smart irrigation system was presented in a Koroneiki olive grove in Crete, where soil moisture sensors, a weather station and remote monitoring are being used to improve the management of available water resources. (synfield.gr)

Similarly, recent research carried out in olive groves in Messinia showed that irrigation strategies adapted to the different development stages of the olive tree can help improve water-use efficiency without compromising the quality of the olive oil produced. On the contrary, its main objective is to apply the right amount of water, at the right time and in the right place.

This allows growers to avoid unnecessary irrigation, identify potential problems earlier and reduce the time required for the daily monitoring of the olive grove.

A recent example comes from Crete, where significant rainfall in September resulted in calculated irrigation requirements remaining at zero for three consecutive weeks up to mid-October. Monitoring real-time conditions can help farmers avoid unnecessary water use in situations like these. Instead, they can complement it by providing a clearer picture of crop conditions and supporting more targeted, informed decisions.

Modern olive farming is gradually moving from simple observation towards agriculture driven by data and information.

Efficient water management is becoming one of the most important challenges facing modern agriculture, particularly in Mediterranean crops such as

[333

post-11237","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-modern-agriculture-sustainability
["GET
